My name is Sophie Zawodny, and I am from Plain City, Ohio. I am graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Architecture and a Studio Art minor. Growing up I was very creative and was always drawing different floor plans for my room, which sparked my interest in design. I’ve always loved the idea of creating something meaningful and leaving a positive impact on the people who experience my designs. This major has pushed me to grow in so many ways and has given me the opportunity to meet my best friends. Looking towards the future, I know I want to explore many areas of the design field by working in both commercial and residential design. After graduation, I plan to move out of Ohio and to a big city, preferably somewhere West.
My thesis project is called Sensory Sanctuary, and it is a multi-purpose facility for adults with autism. This facility will function as a place for these adults to live, work, and continue to learn new skills as they age. Inspired by my sister, who has worked closely with kids and adults with autism, I found that there is a lack of opportunities for these individuals once they age out of the school system at 21. It’s important that adults with autism are in a safe, stable, and community-based environment, where they can keep learning, growing, and working towards independence. A facility such as Sensory Sanctuary would be a great opportunity for adults with autism to thrive.
