Purpose
This policy provides for emergency medical care, including transportation and supportive first aid at the scene, for Athens Campus Ohio University students, employees, and visitors, as needed.

Plan
Trained Ohio University employees may provide supportive first aid administered at the scene of an emergency, and the Ohio University Police Department may also provide transportation for minor medical emergencies.
Serious medical emergencies will be handled by Southeast Ohio Emergency Medical Services (SEOEMS) or another Athens County designated agency, including transportation to medical facilities.
The Ohio University Police Department does not operate an ambulance that is certified in accordance with Chapters 4765 and 4766 of the Ohio Revised Code. Ohio University does not claim that any Ohio University staff member may perform those emergency medical care services restricted by Chapter 4765 of the Ohio Revised Code.

Reporting a Medical Emergency

Telephone calls regarding a minor medical emergency should be placed to the Ohio University Police Department, 593-1911.

Telephone calls regarding a serious medical emergency on or adjacent to the Athens campus should be placed to 911.

Vehicle Equipment and Personnel Training

Ohio University Police Department patrol automobiles shall be equipped with a full standard first aid kit and an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Patrol bicycles shall be equipped with a compact first aid kit. Officers shall be trained in basic first aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) in accordance with training deemed appropriate for law enforcement officers in the State of Ohio.

Ohio University will depend upon SEOEMS or another Athens County designated agency to provide a suitably equipped ambulance and properly trained and certified emergency medical technicians.
