Thriving in Academy Workshop Series

The Thriving in the Academy workshop series (THRIVE) provides learning opportunities and skill development for faculty new to OHIO or who have been in their present position for five years or less. The goal of the workshop series is to assist faculty success during their early career. Topics include research productivity, healthy relationships, time management, and maintaining a proper work-life balance.

Structure

The individual workshops are designed using the Core Curriculum from the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity (NCFDD). The self-paced video series is available to NCFDD members and provides participants with opportunities for professional and personal development. NCFDD membership is free through OHIO’s institutional membership ( membership activation is required).

The THRIVE workshop series at OHIO builds upon the NCFDD videos by allowing in-person discussion, brainstorming, and feedback among participants. Individual workshops begin with a quick review of the topics covered in selected NCFDD videos, which is followed by interactive discussions and exercises.

The workshop series includes five, 80-minute workshop sessions. Each session is focused on one or two skills from the National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity Core Curriculum . Participants are expected to review core curriculum material prior to each workshop.

Learning Outcomes

After completing the THRIVE program, faculty should have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to:

  • Develop effective planning, time management strategies, and daily writing practice.
  • Conduct weekly planning meetings to align time with priorities to balance work and personal life.
  • Identify and manage perfectionist tendencies and adjust standards for satisfaction in the writing process.
  • Explore tools for effective communication and assertiveness in setting boundaries and making informed decisions regarding commitments.
  • Map existing mentoring networks, identifying unmet needs, and planning for network expansion.
  • Cultivate resilience, reduce stress, and foster positive mental and emotional well-being while navigating the challenges of academic life.

Eligibility

All full-time early career faculty, including those new to OHIO or who have been in their present position for five or fewer years, are welcome to join the workshop series. Because some of the discussions and learning outcomes are focused on research, scholarship, and creative activity (RSCA) productivity, early career faculty with RSCA responsibilities are strongly encouraged to participate. Participants are encouraged, but not required to attend all five workshops.
