Pete Mather has been involved in the scholarship and practice of service-learning pedagogy for over 20 years, with a particular focus on asset-based community development and intercultural learning.
His interest in community engagement as a powerful learning approach began with his work as Director of the internship program at The Carter Center, the headquarters of Jimmy Carter's post-presidential, humanitarian work. As a faculty member, Mather has developed a led study abroad programs to Honduras and Ecuador, as well as local service-learning engagement in the communities of Southeastern Ohio. Mather teaches a course on the pedagogy of service learning, and has published several articles on community engagement. His work focuses on ways in which student engagement in communities facilitates transformative learning about leveraging existing assets in poor communities and the implications for educational and social change.
