Asian Studies Undergraduate Certificate

The Asian Studies Certificate — open to undergraduate students from any major — gives students a broad understanding of Asia's critical position in global politics and the world economy. The interdisciplinary curriculum examines these trends as well as the rich cultures, traditions, and societies of East, Southeast, and South Asia.

The program includes courses from various colleges and disciplines, including multiple opportunities for study abroad.

Career Opportunities

This certificate prepares students for careers in international business, diplomacy, education, cultural organizations, non-profit work, journalism, translation and interpretation, law, and governmental and non-governmental organizations focused on Asia-Pacific relations.

Certificate Requirements

Full Requirements and Courses in the Official Academic Catalog

The Asian Studies certificate requires a minimum of 26 hours and maintaining a 2.5 or higher GPA in certificate courses.

Courses and Languages

  • Take the core course HIST 2460 - The Rise of Modern Asia.
  • Complete two years (four semesters) or equivalent of an Asian language. OHIO offers courses in Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Malaysian and Thai.
  • Take three elective courses such as Buddhism, History of Traditional or Modern Japan, Economics of China, and Introduction to Japanese Culture, and many more.
