Formally established in 1993 as a National Science Foundation Industry-University Cooperative Research Center (IUCRC), the Institute for Corrosion and Multiphase Technology (ICMT) aims to better understand and combat corrosion in multiphase flow systems such as those in the oil and gas industry. Predicting – and preventing – this corrosion is one of the many ways we create for good.
The ICMT, one of the largest research facilities of its kind in the world, is unique thanks to its large-scale, specialized equipment that enables the testing of corrosion under field conditions for global partners. The ICMT collaborates with individual industry sponsors, as well as a consortia comprising the world’s leading oil and gas, chemical, and engineering companies.
Led by Russ Professor Srdjan Nesic , the ICMT operates six large project teams including doctoral and master’s degree candidates from the Russ College’s Departments of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and Mechanical Engineering , supported by a team of postdoctoral researchers, project engineers and technicians, and undergraduate students.
The ICMT raised about $40 million in external research funding from 2002-2020. During that time, more than 250 conference papers were presented at international corrosion conferences and more than 150 research papers published in leading peer-reviewed journals. Over 80 students graduated and, today, more than 20 graduate students are conducting research at ICMT, supported by 4 chemical engineering faculty members, 10 post-doctoral researchers, and other technical and administrative staff.
Mission
ICMT's seeks to advance scientific knowledge and practical understanding in the field of corrosion in multiphase flow systems, through:
- Conducting cutting-edge research driven by the industrial needs
- Educating and training highly competent students, who will implement and disseminate this knowledge throughout the corrosion engineering community
Location
The ICMT is located at:
Ohio University's Research and Enterprise Park
