Program Overview
The Advanced Computing major in Ohio University’s Honors Tutorial College offers a highly individualized and rigorous academic experience for students with exceptional academic abilities and a passion for self-directed learning. Students explore advanced topics in computer science through one-on-one tutorials with faculty in the Russ College of Engineering and Technology. The program emphasizes deep mastery of the field and preparation for graduate studies or advanced careers in industry.
Curriculum
Students must complete at least 120 credit hours, maintain a minimum GPA of 3.5, and fulfill all university and HTC requirements including coursework in computer science, mathematics, science, and honors tutorials.
Honors Tutorials and Thesis
Students complete eight tutorials, including two devoted to an original senior honors thesis. These tutorials support in-depth study and research in advanced computing topics under direct faculty mentorship.
Thesis tutorials:
- CS 4970T – Computer Science Tutorial
- CS 4980T – Computer Science Tutorial
Students must also complete a high-quality, advisor-approved thesis that reflects original research and analysis in the field.
Career Opportunities
Graduates of the Advanced Computing major are well prepared for careers as software engineers, system architects, or technical consultants. Many pursue graduate study in computer science or related fields. The combination of rigorous academics and one-on-one mentoring equips students with both deep technical knowledge and highly refined analytical and communication skills.

Admissions Requirements
This is a selective admission program. Students must demonstrate:
- Exceptional academic performance
- Strong potential for independent study and research
- Submission of additional essays and high school teacher recommendations
- An interview with the director of studies
