Federal DIRECT Unsubsidized Loan Limits

The Federal DIRECT Unsubsidized Loan is available to all students regardless of income or credit. This loan is not subsidized by the federal government. You are responsible for all interest that accrues while you are in school, in deferment, or during your grace period. You may choose to make interest payments while in school or defer (and accumulate) the interest until repayment.

Annual

Available amount for...

Year 1 student = $40,500

Year 2 student = $40,500

Year 3 student = $47,167

Year 4 student = $47,167

Aggregate

Over the lifetime of student borrowing, the aggregate limit is $224,000. Does not include Perkins, DIRECT Grad PLUS, or other outside loans.

If you “max out” each year:

  • $ 40,500 Year 1
  • $ 40,500 Year 2
  • $ 47,167 Year 3
  • $ 47,167 Year 4
  • $175,334 Total Unsubsidized Loans Borrowed over a 4 Year Period.

$224,000 Aggregate Limit - $175,334 Borrowed if Unsubsidized Loans are Maxed Out for 4 Years = $48,666 Remaining Unsubsidized Loan Eligibility.

If you matriculate with more debt than $48,666, you will hit the aggregate limit.
