Take Back the Night: Survivor Speakers and March
(Thursday, April 5, 6:30-9 p.m., Baker University Center Ballroom): Take Back the Night originally began in 1976 as "Reclaim the Night" in Belgium as a march to end violence against women. Often referred to as Take Back the Night, the march is associated with universities and continues to reclaim the night from sexual violence. It's been held in Athens, OH since 1979, and everyone, regardless of gender, is welcome to participate. NOTE: This program has received an exemption from mandated reporting in order to allow for full-campus participation by all member of the campus community. Disclosures of incidents of sexual misconduct at this event will NOT be considered notice to Ohio University.

2018 Athens International Film + Video Festival (Monday, April 9 through Sunday, April 15, Athena Cinema): Founded in 1974, the Athens International Film + Video Festival has been presenting the best in international film for 45 years. Known globally as a festival that supports cinema from independent, underground, and marginalized populations, the AIFVF represents the values of the Athens community. Each year, a prescreening committee comprising artists, students, and community activists watches and evaluates all of the films and videos submitted for competition to determine which pieces to include in the public screenings - this year, AIFVF received over 2,300 submissions! Invited guest jurors will award cash prizes to films competing in four categories: documentary, experimental, narrative, and animation. This year, the 45th annual festival welcomes multimedia artist, vocalist and instrumentalist Laurie Anderson; experimental filmmaker Laura Craning; interdisciplinary artist Joseph Keckler; and filmmaker Anahita Ghazvinizadeh to Athens. Spring Literary Festival (opens Wednesday, April 11, 7:30 p.m., Walter Hall Rotunda): Since 1986, the Spring Literary Festival has featured some of the world's finest, most distinguished writers of poetry, fiction and non-fiction. This year’s program, which runs through April 13, will feature fiction writer Mary Gaitskill, nonfiction writers Geoff Dyer and Aisha Sabatini Sloan, and poets Alan Shapiro and Rosanna Warren. All readings are free and open to the public, so don't miss it!
