UC 2030—Credit for Work Experience: Portfolio Development

Course Description

Seminar designed to assist adult students in clarifying career, personal, and educational goals with emphasis on documenting college-level learning from prior experience and documenting this learning for assessment.

Methods of Course Instruction

All material for this course is print-based. Instructor and students communicate and exchange materials through postal mail. 

E-Print Option

In this course, an option exists to use e-mail to submit your lesson assignments. Your assignment will be returned to you either as an e-mail attachment or as a hard copy sent through the postal mail, depending on the preferences of the instructor and/or program.

Number of Lessons

The course has six lessons and no supervised course examinations. The lessons include:

  • Lesson 1: Experiential Learning: An Overview
  • Lesson 2: Writing the Chronological Record
  • Lesson 3: Writing the Goals Paper
  • Lesson 4: Selecting Courses for Assessment
  • Lesson 5: Writing Learning Statements and Documenting Course Requests
  • Lesson 6: Compiling the Portfolio

Types of Writing Assignments

Each lesson has at least one writing assignment. Most of the assignments help you develop specific parts of the portfolio, but you do not include these assignments in the finished portfolio. Each assignment is submitted to your instructor, who will evaluate it and return it with comments and suggestions for revision. The revised version, completed and typed by you, may become part of the completed section of a portfolio and will contribute to your grade in the UC 2030 course. Everything that is included in the finished portfolio should be printed with no handwritten changes or comments included. You will be given specific instructions for each assignment at the end of each lesson.

Grading Criteria

Letter grades are ordinarily given for this course. If you wish the grade of “CR” (credit) instead, you must request it at the beginning of the course. Your final evaluation in this course will take into account your assignments, your articulation and documentation of prior learning in your portfolio, and the organization of the various components into a comprehensive, well-written document.
