Curriculum Globalization

The  International Opportunities Think Tank (IOTT) Report, in its primary action item, emphasizes the need for a paradigm shift through the strategic integration of international activity into core teaching, scholarship, and community engagement missions across the university.

The report presented in April 2022  identifies three primary goals for OHIO's global curriculum- Global Awareness, Global Diversity, and Global Action. Through global learning, students will become informed, open-minded, and responsible individuals who are attentive to diversity across the spectrum of differences; who seek to understand how their actions affect both local and global communities; and who are prepared to address the world’s most pressing and enduring issues collaboratively and equitably. The integration, expansion, and enhancement of our global curriculum helps OHIO become a more culturally diverse and inclusive institution. And the global curriculum must be accessible to all OHIO students, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, ability status, finances, on-campus commitments or areas of study. Global learning -- including global lecture courses and seminars, global virtual collaborative and experiential learning, study abroad, and other opportunities -- must incorporate inclusive student-centered pedagogies in their development and implementation.

Recommendations included;

  • OHIO Global Learning for All:Faculty-led efforts to bring together research and teaching, integrate and expand global learning opportunities, and institutionalize and assess global programs across the university. The initiative would build upon OHIO’s robust partnerships with universities around the world, and it would support faculty and programs that include strategic on- site and virtual global opportunities and collaborations in their course offerings.
  • Integration of the Global Curriculum:Establishing a G-course designation, developing a Global BRICKS Arch and a Global certificate. 
  • Expansion of the Global Curriculum:Establishing Global Transformation Workshops led by faculty.  
  • Facilitating standalone certificate opportunities for non-OHIO target populations to achieve non-degree credentials for clusters of courses
  • Establishing multi-institutional partnerships for language and cultural exchange with other universities in the state to facilitate student exchanges.
