Sophie Downing (M.A., Ohio University) is a fourth-year PhD candidate at Ohio University. She graduated from the University of Portland in 2021, where she majored in organizational communication and English, with a minor in social justice. Sophie’s research interests currently include the intersections of narrative and identity, family communication, communication in instructional contexts, the creation and maintenance of power structures, and the constructive power of language. Her dissertation is an oral history project of her own extended family, in which she explores how families are storied. Sophie's work can be found in Communication Education , Communication Teacher , and Health Communication . Outside of academics, she enjoys being in community, reading novels and memoirs, baking the department's best chocolate chip cookies, and decompressing with bad reality television.
