PRE4CLE Overview
PRE4CLE is a collective impact initiative working to expand access to preschool for all 3- and 4-year-olds in the city of Cleveland so that every child enters kindergarten ready to succeed. PRE4CLE connects families to high-quality public and private preschool programs; connects preschool providers to tools, resources, and key partners to increase their quality and serve more children; and provides strategic leadership and advocacy to accelerate the availability of high-quality preschool in Cleveland.
PRE4CLE was developed in 2014 to fulfill a core goal of Cleveland’s Plan for Transforming Schools and is guided by The Cleveland Early Childhood Compact, a public-private leadership body.
Position Summary
The PRE4CLE Communication Intern will support PRE4CLE’s communication operations in numerous ways. Because of the small size of PRE4CLE's staff, interns are an integral part of PRE4CLE's communication team. Work will include social media, email, and website content creation and writing and research. Additionally, the intern will have some ability to shape the direction of their work based on their own expertise and learning goals. The intern will be supervised by the Communication Manager and will work closely with the Deputy Director, Executive Director, and other team members. The intern will work 23 hours per week, depending on their needs to meet internship requirements. PRE4CLE works to provide interns with authentic and immersive learning experiences. Interns will have the opportunity to join meetings related to subjects in which they have an interest and, to some extent, guide the direction of their work. PRE4CLE is committed to providing interns with professional development opportunities.
Responsibilities and Expected Outcomes
Support for Annual Report release, including:
- Writing and editing
- Social media and communication support
Assist with general recruitment efforts including:
- Supporting PRE4CLE's marketing campaign
- Working with recruitment staff in the field at events to talk to parents and generate content for social media and web (on pause until in-person events resume)
Support PRE4CLE's communication and advocacy efforts, including:
- Becoming familiar with PRE4CLE's research-based communication plan and advocacy strategies as well as early childhood issues
- Supporting PRE4CLE's event planning efforts
- Writing policy briefs or other advocacy content, as needed
- Creating social, web, and email content, including visual content
- Updating website
- Taking photos
- Participating in outreach to policymakers
Essential Qualifications, Credentials and Technical Skills Desired
1. Strong written communication skills, especially with web, email, and/or social media content. 2. Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks and multitask.
3. Willingness to learn new technology and subject matter.
4. Interest in education and public policy, preferred.
Schedule and Transportation
Interns would be expected to complete their work between 9:30 and 5, Tuesday-Thursday. If evening or weekend hours are required, plenty of notice and flex time would be provided. Interns would have the ability to set their schedule based on their other commitments and to notify their supervisor of their schedule. At this time, the intern will be able to occasionally work remotely. Reimbursement for travel outside to and from the office will be provided.
Compensation and Benefits
The PRE4CLE Communication Intern will be paid $15 per hour for up to 23 hours per week.

- Student Development Newsletter from the dean’s office - This is sent each week directly to your OHIO email in-box. If you aren't seeing it, search your Spam, Clutter or Junk folders for emails from "Scripps College of Communication via Handshake."
- Specific company websites – If you’re interested in a particular geographic area, you may need to look at the possibilities and then make inquiries. For example, if you want to intern at a newspaper, first make a list of the newspapers in the area and then do some research on their websites to see if they list internships. The Scripps College of Communication has instituted new reporting forms for these types of experiences for ALL students across the college! Please help us to track the amazing internships and experiences you're completing by filling out the appropriate form at the conclusion of your experience.
If you are completing an internship whether required for graduation (e.g. the School of Journalism or the School of Visual Communication) or not, complete the form at this link:
You MUST complete the form in its entirety, complete with your supervisor name and email.
JOURNALISM students: After you have completed the Internship Report Form, your internship supervisor will receive an email from Ohio University Scripps College of Communication with an internship evaluation link and password that allows them to complete and return your internship evaluation. Your internship evaluation form is used to verify that you have completed your internships. After your internship supervisor completes your evaluation form, it will be sent to you academic advisor for approval. After your academic advisor approves your internship evaluation form, your DARS will be updated to reflect you have completed your internship requirement for your degree.
