Status Eligibility

All full-time students currently enrolled in a graduate program in the Scripps College of Communication are eligible. Specifically, all master and doctoral programs housed in the following schools are eligible: The E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, The J.W. McClure School of Emerging Communication Technologies, The School of Communication Studies, The School of Media Arts & Studies, and The School of Visual Communication.

Diversity Eligibility

Keeping in line with the mission statement of the Diversity Committee, a student may be eligible in one of two ways. Either the student is a member of an underrepresented population or the student’s research focus directly relates to or impacts underrepresented communities.

Availability of Funds

The maximum amount a Master’s Thesis/Project or Dissertation may be awarded is $500 per semester. Applicants are encouraged to apply as many times as they wish, however each applicant can only be awarded once per degree. The Diversity Committee may, at their discretion, adjust the amount or number of awards based on availability of funds and the number of applicants.

Use of Funds

This grant is intended to support direct project costs and travel related expenses for data collection or field work. This grant cannot be used for expenses related to conferences (See Travel Award), seminars or researcher salary.

Submission Deadlines

This grant shall be awarded to graduate students every Fall and Spring of a school year cycle.
The due dates for the Award are:
Spring Semester: November 1 at 5 p.m. (For expenses incurred Dec. through April)
Summer and Fall Semester: March 1 at 5 p.m. (for expenses incurred May through November)

Graduate Grant Award Checklist

In order for your application to be considered for the Graduate Grant Award, all documents and relevant materials must be submitted together no later than the Fall or Spring deadlines. Applicant must complete and sign the checklist. All documents must be submitted as a PDF and in the following order:
