Experiential Learning
Alexandra (Alex) Rhue is the Assistant Director of Signature Programs. Believing strongly in the importance of experiential learning, Alex is excited to develop and support Signature Programs (interdisciplinary place-based experiential learning opportunities that foster a positive connection to and understanding of the Athens/Appalachian region), including New Adventures: A First-Year Outdoor Orientation Trips program in partnership with OHIO’s Outdoor Pursuits.
Alex’s passion for experiential learning has led her on a path of outdoor learning and involvement with many branches. She has nearly a decade of working seasonally as an outdoor educator, instructor, program director, and regional director for outdoor education and adventure programs. She has taught as an adjunct instructor in natural resources for a community college and has experience in supporting student project development and implementation. Her professional areas include wilderness risk management, equity, inclusion, and belonging in outdoor education, wilderness medicine, experiential and place-based education, global leadership and international education, park and museum education, and historical/environmental interpretation.
Alex is a proud three-time Ohio Bobcat, earning her bachelor’s degrees in Broadcast Journalism and Outdoor Recreation, her Master’s in Recreation Studies, and is currently working to complete her doctorate in Higher Education and Student Affairs. She is certified as a Wilderness First Responder and EMT.
