WINTER MEETING NOTICE

The manner and format of the traditional winter meeting came up for discussion at the November 5, 2010, OACES meeting held during the AOCC conference. It was clear that those in attendance did not want to have a traditional 6-hour lecture format. Instead, several matters and topics for discussion came to the floor with the idea that these issues could be further explored and acted upon at a winter meeting.

For example, three topics were presented by members in attendance. These topics were briefly discussed. Time prohibited lengthy treatment of these topics or the inclusion of others. Specifically, members felt that the OACES winter meeting should address the following three topics:


 1.  Government relations-how can we best promote our agenda?
 2.  Professional identity in an age of life coaches, career facilitators, and for-profit education.
 3.  Promoting the "Ohio-model" of state ACES associations.
    *   Here is how we do it in Ohio (ACES conference proposal)

Dr. Darcy Haag Granello suggested that the Ohio State University could facilitate a meeting in Ohio Union as a cost-saving measure rather than use a hotel or other meeting-hosting facility. I asked Darcy to reserve space for us on Friday, January 21st and she was successful in that endeavor.

With this history in mind, I propose that we use our Winter meeting in the following manner.

12:30 - 1:00    Welcome, identify the three most pressing topics facing our profession.
1:00 - 1:50      Issue 1
2:00 - 2:50      Issue 2
3:00 - 3:50      Issue 3
4:00 - 4:30      wrap up and dismissal

I further propose that we use each of our Issue Sessions in the following manner:

First 25 minutes:         -Identify Session leader
                                    -Identify Session scribe
                                    -Define the problem in concrete and measureable terms
                                    -Define the historical antecedents of the problem
-Define the consequences of the issue if left unaddressed

Next 25 minutes:         -Identify action plans to address the problem including outcome goals, deadlines, and success probabilities for each action plan
                                    -Select the plan with the highest probability of success
                                    -Assign action plan responsibilities

10 minute break

Before we pull the trigger on this new conference format I need to know whether the energy that was present at the AOCC conference for these topics persists.  In other words, are you willing to come to Columbus and participate in this process?
