The Center for Intervention Research in Schools (CIRS) is an internationally recognized, interdisciplinary research center that integrates training and service into all activities. Our goal is to improve the lives of children (early childhood through emerging adulthood) who struggle with emotional and behavioral challenges through school-based interventions and supports.
CIRS is home to highly productive faculty, representing four colleges and departments within OHIO — The College of Arts and Science, Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine and the Scripps College of Communications. CIRS is made up of four full-time staff members, 12 graduate students and multiple undergraduate research assistants.
CIRS has office space in Athens and Columbus. CIRS faculty have received over $29 million in federal grants (e.g., NIMH, NIAAA, IES, NSF, PCORI, CDC) since our inception in 2012.
Prospective Graduate Students
Students interested in engaging in the child-focused research within CIRS are accepted into the clinical psychology doctoral program each year. Students who are interested in applying to work with Dr. Evans, Dr. Owens, Dr. Allan and/or Dr. Wymbs are encouraged to explore the information available on the website and on each faculty member’s research page.
Additional information may also be found at the psychology graduate degrees page . The application deadline is December 1st each year. We look forward to reviewing your application!
Prospective Undergraduate Students
CIRS offers research opportunities for undergraduate students throughout the academic year as well as a summer research experience for undergraduates through NSF.
Research Assistant Positions
Each semester, there may be opportunities for undergraduate students to enroll in PSY 3940 credit and participate in research activities within CIRS. Research assistants at CIRS typically engage in the following activities:
- participating in research meetings
- data collection procedures with parents, youth and teachers
- data entry, data management and data coding
- structured observations of classrooms
Research assistants can also seize the opportunity to present research at conferences and contribute to the publication of journal articles.
Research Assistant Application Process
If you are interested in a research assistant position within CIRS, email Breanna Oswald , Clinical Research Coordinator of CIRS, to express your interest in a PSY 3940 position and include the following information:
- A cover letter indicating why they are interested in a research assistant position
- A resume or vita including contact information, current grade point average, past research, service or volunteer experience and courses completed
Because CIRS projects often span the entire academic year, students are often asked to commit to completing two semesters of PSY 3940 coursework.
NSF Summer Experience for Undergrads (REU)
Funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), CIRS offers a research experience for undergraduates (REU) site program on OHIO's Athens campus each summer. The program offers a 7-week in-depth, hands-on experience for undergraduate psychology, social work, education, biology and pre-med students. Check out the program page for more information, including eligibility and the application process.
