Child Language and Literacy Certificate

The College of Health Sciences and Professions and the College of Education jointly sponsor a graduate certificate program that provides graduate students in speech-language pathology and teacher education with foundational knowledge in child language and literacy. 

The knowledge gained from this Child Language and Literacy Certificate better prepares future professionals in education and speech-language pathology to support children’s language and literacy skills in the school setting.

For Speech-Language Pathology Students: This certificate provides students in the graduate speech-language pathology degree program (MA-SLP) with foundational knowledge in relation to content area literacy instruction, literacy practices and strategies, phonics, and the structure of language. Given the importance of children’s literacy development, the knowledge gained from this certificate should better prepare SLP graduate students to contribute to the literacy development of children who have speech and language impairments.

For Teacher Education Students:This certificate provides teacher education students with foundational knowledge about children with speech and language impairments, the language demands in the curriculum/academic standards, and an overview of language assessment and intervention. The certificate also benefits students who will potentially be working alongside SLPs to provide education for children who have speech and language impairments.
