In the English – Literature, Culture, & Writing major, get ready to develop 21st-century skills in analysis and writing by engaging in critical dialogue with traditions, conventions, and cultural contexts of diverse British and American literary texts. In this flexible concentration, you can focus on the study of writing in a variety of rhetorical modes and methods of composition.
Small-enrollment courses focusing on different historical periods and different cultural and technological contexts draw connections between the past and present and allow you to practice collaborative learning, pursue complex ideas, and deepen your pleasure in language and writing — both others’ and your own.

The major is flexible enough to match your own interest and goals: you can fulfill up to 9 of the required hours in the major with creative writing workshops, courses in rhetoric or visual texts, or apprenticeship or internship experiences.
Like all majors in the English Department, the English – Literature, Culture, & Writing major includes the English Core to provide a solid foundation in literary genres and research.
