To become a successful arts administrator and meet the evolving needs of the field, students need applied leadership acumen as well as the creative tools to facilitate and evaluate the needs of arts organizations.
The Master of Arts Administration (M.A.A.) degree at OHIO harnesses the interdisciplinary and creative power of the Chaddock + Morrow College of Fine Arts with an innovative curricular approach that merges arts administration knowledge with training in discipline-specific arts management. Foundational courses that emphasize arts leadership, governance, management, and development are taken alongside courses in a chosen specialized arts area.
Focused on training the artist-administrator, the degree is uniquely tailored to provide mentorship, experiential and community-engaged learning opportunities, an examination of access and equity in the arts, and career readiness. Students become equipped to helm arts and cultural organizations, navigate unique challenges in the nonprofit sector, and advocate for policies, resources, and programs that support arts organizations. Graduates of the program will become effective leaders who have meaningful, sustainable impact in the organizations and communities they serve.
Every student enrolled in the Master of Arts Administration program completes four required foundational courses, chooses one area of specialization, and concludes with a professional internship.

Master of Arts Administration Student Manages OHIO’s Emerging Graphic Design Agency

Caroline Murphy is a student in the Master of Arts Administration (MAA) program, with area specialization in visual arts management. She is also a second-year student in the Master of Fine Art in Graphic Design at Ohio University. Merging her degrees with her career plans, Murphy is also working as the project manager for, Oh You! Design Agency .

Social Enterprise Serves as Essential Course for MAA Students
In Fall 2024, all students in the Master of Arts Administration (MAA) program, alongside students from other majors at OHIO university, were enrolled in the Social Entrepreneurship course. The course is housed in the Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs. This semester, the course was co-taught by Faith Knutsen, Voinovich School Director of Social Innovation & Entrepreneurship, and Dr. Allison Ricket, Assistant Research Professor and Director of Analytics, Impact Measurement and Management with Voinovich, who holds the highest credentialing in the topic in the nation. Social Entrepreneurship is a required course for all MAA students and is readily discussed as an essential course by program alumni.

The Master of Arts Administration (MAA) in OHIO’s Chaddock + Morrow College of Fine Arts prepares passionate, qualified artist-administrators to meet the challenges of the evolving field. The MAA amplifies the importance of building relationships and working with our communities, partnering with arts and culture organizations across the globe through its student mentorship, innovative curriculum, assignments, and placement in the Professional Internship in the Arts. The internship provides a high-quality learning experience for the MAA students but also supports numerous non-profit organizations through meaningful support of their mission and work in their communities.
