Studying abroad/away is an exciting opportunity to gain global experience, but understanding the costs involved is essential for planning your journey.
Each OHIO-Credit program has term-specific estimated costs that are determined before an application is opened. The total estimated cost for an OHIO-Credit program can be broken down into 4 sections:
Line Item | Description | Payment Details |
---|---|---|
Program Fee
|
This fee covers the costs specific to participating on this global experience, often covering accommodations/housing, excursions, and activities onsite. | This is charged to the student account and due during the term of travel following the University standard billing cycles . |
Study Abroad Admin Fee (international experiences only) |
This is assessed for all international travel experiences supporting study abroad operations including application system management, credit transfer administration, and supporting students abroad. | This is charged to the student account and due during the term of travel following the University standard billing cycles . |
Tuition/Fees
|
Each program requires a certain number of credit hours for participation, which will be denoted on the program website and student budget worksheet. Tuition/fee rates are set by the University and more information can be found https://www.ohio.edu/bursar/tuition-fees . Note: Programs may have academic requirements split across multiple terms (ex. a spring and summer course) and participation/registration for coursework would be required both terms. |
This is charged to the student account. Tuition is tied to the semester in which the coursework is associated and is due following the University standard billing cycles . |
Out-of-Pocket Expenses
|
This is a broad section which includes estimates of specific line items which are necessary to complete the experience. This may include estimates for passport, airfare, meals not included in the program, cell phone, incidentals, etc. | These items are not billed to the university account and payment deadlines will vary (ex. airfare needs purchased before travel, while meals not included will be purchased onsite) |
Additional Information on Program Costs
Contingency Funds
Participants should have access to contingency funds and resources to cover unanticipated medical or other expenses. The University provides international emergency health insurance for students traveling abroad, however not all medical care providers overseas accept this in lieu of payment up front. Travelers may need to cover the cost up front and seek reimbursement after the fact.
Withdraw Policy
If a participant decides to withdraw or is removed from the program after accepting their nomination and paying the deposit, the student will still be held responsible for fees related to the program. Specifically, the participant will be charged 100% of the program fee (as indicated above) and the $150 administrative fee. For further details, participants should refer to the Participant Agreement in the application portal for the specific program.
Tuition and Fees
Tuition and fees are assessed by the Office of the Bursars and additional information on tuition and fee schedules can be found at www.ohio.edu/bursar . Tuition schedules do not include special class fees.
Participants may be required to pay additional fees, including but not limited to: Student Health Insurance, College Technology Fees, Student Info System, Student Legal Service Fee, and Wellbeing Plan. The tech fee is based on your home college. If you are eligible to waive the Student Health Insurance, Student Legal Service Fee, and/or the Wellbeing Plan, you may do so through your "MyOHIO Student Center."
Ohio University reserves the right to make, without prior notice, any fee adjustments that may become necessary.
Special notes:
- Campus of Instruction:Tuition rates are assessed based on the campus indicated under Program Costs.
- Non-Resident Students: Non-Resident Fees are offset by a scholarship for programs offered during the summer term.
- Graduate Students:If you currently receive a graduate tuition waiver from your department, you will need to contact your department to see if it can be applied. Note: Tuition Waivers do not cover the Program Fee.
- Programs completed over winter-break and spring break:The credit-hours associated with the program are part of the spring semester. Students will not incur additional tuition costs for the spring semester if they are taking 12 – 20 (Undergraduate) or 9-18 (Graduate) Athens campus hours, including the hours associated with the program. Students taking less than or more than the ranges listed above for the spring term will see their tuition adjusted accordingly.
