At Ohio University, sexual assault prevention education begins before a student steps on campus as an official Bobcat – and continues throughout each student's college career.
This education includes bystander intervention, the only research-approved method to prevent sexual assaults on college campuses. We teach that if you see someone in need, there are ways you can safely intervene, including being direct when safe and able, creating a distraction, or by delegating to others when help is needed.
Education Activities for Ohio University Students
-
Sexual Misconduct Education
We start conversations about sexual misconduct and interpersonal violence, including stalking, dating violence and sexual assault through required modules following Bobcat Student Orientation (BSO), including definitions of sexual assault and consent and discussions on how we hold students accountable who are found in violation of sexual misconduct.
-
AlcoholEDU & Sexual Assault Prevention for Undergraduates
All first-year and transfer students are required to enroll and successfully pass AlcoholEDU and Sexual Assault Prevention for Undergraduates (Vector Solutions) before they can enroll for classes their spring semester. A refresher course of both modules is also required for third-year students the summer before they move-off campus and also for graduate students employed in the Division of Student Affairs.
-
Student-Athlete Vector Solutions Training
OHIO's student-athletes receive tailored training from our partner, Vector Solutions, each year. This is in addition to the training that all students receive.
-
Safety First: Alcohol and Other Drugs Training
All first-year students enrolled in Learning Communities (98 percent of students) participate in interpersonal violence awareness training and the Safety First program, which provides both harm reduction and bystander intervention education.
-
Prevention Education Opportunities
The Division of Student Affairs Well-being office offers in-person prevention education , including bystander intervention and programming that disrupts rape myth acceptance and victim-blaming attitudes.
-
Violence Prevention Education
The Ohio University Women’s Center also often does programming around violence prevention, and their workshops are open to everyone. View programming calendar
