How many classes will I complete in the program?
The M.A. in Organizational Communication program consists of seven courses in total:
- Two required core courses (4 credits each): COMS 6520 - Communication Processes and Organizations and COMS 6100 – Measurement Methodology in Communication
- 4 elective courses (4 credits each)
- 1 Capstone Project (6 credits)
30 total credit hours are required to complete the program
When can I apply and begin the program?
We have rolling admissions, and students can begin in the fall, spring, or summer semesters.
How long are the courses in this program?
Courses are structured in accelerated 7-week terms, allowing students to focus intensively on one class at a time. The Capstone Project is completed over a 15-week semester. We offer classes during the first and second 7-weeks of each semester.
Do I need to attend any in-person meetings?
No. The program is 100% online with no scheduled in-person meeting times required.
Are there set times when I need to log in for classes?
No. Courses are asynchronous, so there are no required live sessions. However, there are weekly deadlines for assignments and activities.
What learning platform is used for the online classes?
All courses are delivered through Canvas, Ohio University’s online learning management system.
Are instructors available for support outside of class?
Yes. While instructors do not have scheduled office hours, they are readily available by email or video conferencing to answer your questions. Simply email to schedule an appointment at a time that works for you.
Are there group projects in this program?
Yes, some courses include group assignments. Students are responsible for collaborating with their peers to determine meeting times that fit everyone’s schedules.
What citation style should I use for assignments?
Students are expected to use APA format for all written assignments. This is a graduate-level program and proper citation of sources is required.
How much time should I expect to devote to a 4-credit graduate-level class each week?
On average, students should plan to spend 8-10 hours per week on each 4-credit graduate-level course. This includes time for:
- Reading and reviewing course materials
- Participating in online discussions
- Completing assignments and projects
The time commitment may vary slightly based on your familiarity with the content and the specific course workload but maintaining a consistent schedule each week will help you stay on track and succeed in the accelerated 7-week format.
Will I have any support throughout the program?
Yes! You will be assigned two key support advisors:
- A graduate student specialist to help with registration and administrative questions.
- An academic advisor who will help you create a graduation plan during your first semester, so you have a clear path to degree completion.
Can I earn certificates on my way to degree completion?
Yes! As you progress through the M.A. in Organizational Communication program, you may be eligible to earn graduate-level certificates that align with your coursework. These certificates can add value to your resume even before you complete your full degree.
