MSES Admission Requirements 

Successful MSES applicants will have the following:

  • A letter of intent detailing your proposed topics of study within Ohio University's applied learning experience. Connect your proposed topics with your academic background, skills, and relevant work experience. This letter of intent is also evaluated as a writing sample.Identify three Ohio University faculty members whose classes or research connect most directly to your intended areas of study. We highly recommend that prospective students contact faculty with whom they would like to work prior to application.
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Undergraduate transcripts
  • Scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) (optional)
  • If you are not a native English speaker, you must score:
    • At least 600 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or,
    • iB – 80 Composite, all Section Scores of 17 or,
    • IELTS – 6.5 Composite
  • A personal interview or electronic correspondence is desirable but not required. 

Application Deadlines

The Voinovich School accepts applicants for Fall semester start, while dual degree or accelerated graduate pathway students may apply for either semester. The school gives priority acceptance and funding consideration to applications received by February 1.

Application Checklist

  1. Application
    • Apply online .
    • The application fee is $50
    • The Program Name is Environmental Studies; the Program Code is MS 6956.
    • The Ohio University institution code for reporting the TOEFL is 1593.
    • For Campus, choose ‘Athens’
    • Choose the appropriate Entry Term (for January, choose Spring; August, choose Fall)
  2. Transcripts

    Request an official transcript from all institutions of higher education where you earned a bachelor’s degree or higher and arrange for them to be sent to Ohio University, Graduate College, 220 Research & Technology Center, Athens, OH 45701-2979. Ohio University transcripts will be obtained by the Graduate College on your behalf. You may either request official transcripts or upload unofficial transcripts for institutions of higher education where you completed less than a bachelor’s degree (i.e. associate degree) or attended without receiving a degree.

  3. Recommendation Letters
    • Arrange for three individuals to submit letters of recommendation on your behalf. Preferably one letter should come from a faculty member or other instructor.
    • When prompted on the online application, request that your recommenders be contacted through the online application process for electronic submission of their recommendation letters. You will need to enter each individual’s name and e-mail address. Your recommender can upload a copy of the letter on letterhead as an attachment in the system.
    • Letters of recommendation should include the recommender’s relationship to you and their complete address and contact information, including a clearly identifiable professional e-mail address.
  4. Resume

    Upload an up-to-date and current professional resume as an attachment to your online application in the Supplemental Materials section of the online application.

  5. Letter of Intent/ Personal Statement
    • Upload this document as a separate attachment to your online application in the Supplemental Materials section. Please limit the length of the statement to no more than three double-spaced pages.
    • Your statement should provide a brief autobiographical sketch and describe what strengths, qualities, and attributes you bring to the MSES classroom. Discuss your accomplishments, career goals, research interests, and the value of the MSES degree to achieving your career goals. Identify which faculty aligns best with your research and career interests.
  6. GRE
    • The GRE is currently optional for admission. Visit the GRE website for information about the test with preparation materials.
