Biographical Note
Evelyn Mae Coutler Luchs (1903-1994) was the daughter of Charles Clifford Coulter and Lottie Mae (Hugus) Coulter. She was one of six children. During her life she was a magazine columnist, the first woman appointed to the Board of Trustees of Ohio University, and wife of Fred Luchs, a prominent Presbyterian minister in Athens, Ohio.
A 1921 graduate of Stuebenville High School in Stuebenville, Ohio, Luchs was Valedictorian of her class as well as class treasurer and active in the debate team and associate editor of the yearbook. She later went on to attend Ohio University and received her graduate degree in education at the Teachers College at Columbia University in New York in 1931. Shortly there after in 1933 she married Fred Luchs, a young minister. The couple adopted four children ages 4-8 in 1943. With her new family in her house, Evelyn Luchs wrote magazine columns about their adoption and family life experiences. In 1948, Evelyn was named "First Lady of the Year" by the Athens chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, and in 1950, she was appointed the First Woman Trustee at Ohio University.
Fred and Evelyn retired in Athens, Ohio where Fred died on May 20, 1993 at age 89, and Evelyn died March 16, 1994 at age 90.
