Beman Gates and Martin Pomeroy Wells brief biographies

Item — Box: Mixed Collections 1, Folder: 25

Scope and Contents

Text reads: "Beman Gates. Born, Montague, Mass., January 5th, 1818. Settled in Marietta, Ohio in 1837. Died, Marietta, December 17th, 1894." and "Martin Pomeroy Wells. Born, Cape Elizabeth, Maine, June 9th, 1821. Settled in Marietta, Ohio, in 1841. Died, Marietta, Ohio, September 23rd, 1894."

"Associated with others, these two noble men founded in 1863, the First National Bank of Marietta, Ohio, and served continuously as Directors of the institution during the remainder of their lives.

At the organization of the bank Mr. Gates was elected President, and continued in that position for twenty-four years. In June 1887, he resigned and accepted the office of Vice President, which position he held at the time of his death.

Mr. Wells served as Vice President for twenty years, from 1867 to 1887. For thirty-one years they were thus intimately associated, and now death has separated them by less than three months. Both were Christian men of exalted character, strict integrity and great ability, and gave to the institution their earnest and conscientious attention. Their death removes from Marietta two of its best and most prominent citizens, and is a loss not only to the instituion whose interests they guarded so long and so carefully, but to Marietta College, of which they were both Trustees; to the churhes with which they were connected, and to the entire community. The officers and surviving Directors of the bank unite in paying affectionate tribute to their memory."
