"Autographed letter signed. Belpre. D. Loring to Capt. Samuel Frost. Taxes set for non-residents in 1804, but word not received until after the effective date. Thus all who did not pay are subject to a double tax and a penalty. Taxes are now 40 cents per 100 acres. Even now does not know what the last Legistlature did about new taxes. Adds a postscript saying that the Louisiana Purchase will be of no great advantage to the nation." - from dealer description

Scope and Contents Includes "letters from Otis to Warren Nixon during the period from March 1843 to April 1848 in which he discusses the weather, crops, the prices of foods (wheat at 16 cents a bushel, oats at 12-1/2 cents, pork from $1.50 to $2.00 a side). Times were hard, many could not get enough money to pay taxes. In 1846 he thinks he may have to bring suit to disposses a Black family living on some of his land. He seems to have a good-sized farm. In 1848 he has health problems, but works occasionally at...
