50th Anniversary Linguistics Colloquium | Function Word Restoration, April 1

The Linguistics Colloquium series presents Dr. Liang Tao discussing “Function Word Restoration” on Friday, April 1, from 12:55 to 1:50 p.m. via Microsoft TEAMS.

Contact Dr. David Bell , associate professor and chair of Linguistics at Ohio University.

Tao is professor of Linguistics and director of the Chinese language program in the Linguistics Department at OHIO.

Abstract : This study introduces two experiments to measure how frequent function words are processed during reading. The study tested native speakers and learners of Chinese and English in processing their native and foreign languages. The results reflect a word-restoration effect in reading one’s native language. The findings indicate that frequent function words, even when absent, are not disregarded by native speakers but rather are treated as necessary by them. They also indicate a developmental progression during reading. The study further supports the effect of usage frequency in language development.
