Join us to celebrate the launch of Dr. Paschal Younge's book "AUGUSTINE KWASIGA YOUNGE:THE PIONEER IN THE REVITALIZATION & AFRICANIZATION OF THE CATHOLIC LITURGY AND MASS IN GHANA."
Prof. Younge's book recounts the life of Augustine Kwasiga Younge, who in the late 1950s, became concerned about the general Catholic congregations’ aspirations, which led to gradually drifting away into other churches because of the non–appealing nature of hymns and other songs performed during Mass. He realized the urge to inject more African Culture into Catholic worship to revitalize the Liturgy and Mass. In a solo effort, he started a revolution in the Church’s music in Ghana by initially replacing the “Old Latin Hymns” with traditional tunes accompanied by African percussion instruments. As his determination persisted, he found himself in the greatest imbroglio as some church elders and musicians cast insinuations for what they believed to be the anti-Christ (Catholic). Coincidentally at this very time, there was an Apostolic Constitution decree from Rome on liturgical reforms to fit and blend other non–Latin traditions, cultures, and music.
