As a guest lecturer hosted by the School of Interdisciplinary Arts, Boynton will explore the question: What are the mechanisms that create the impression of sound in the visual arts? musical imagery in the translation of one nonverbal medium into another is the focus of her presentation, Sound into Image: Translation Across Nonverbal Media.
BIO
Dr. Susan Boynton is Professor of Music and Historical Musicology at Columbia University. Her research interests include liturgy and music in medieval Western monasticism; manuscript studies; music in the Iberian peninsula; music and childhood; and intersections of music with the visual arts. Boynton is widely published, including Shaping a Monastic Identity: Liturgy and History at the Imperial Abbey of Farfa, 1000-1125 (2006); Silent Music: Medieval Song and the Construction of History in Eighteenth-Century Spain (2011); and the co-edited volumes: The Practice of the Bible in the Middle Ages (2011); Resounding Images: Medieval Intersections of Art, Music, and Sound (2015); and Young Choristers, 650-1700 (2008).
