This activity is in conjunction with the exhibition In Hand: Contemporary Material Engagements with the Built World.
Nicole Seisler’s public art project invites participants to join together on local walks with blocks of wet porcelain in-hand, which they use to make impressions of architectural details that visually and culturally define a place. The raw clay acts as a conduit that heightens our individual sensation of touch and physical connection to our surroundings. The resulting ‘souvenirs’ become records of particular moments in time and place. One side of each ceramic object captures texture and pattern lifted from surfaces nearby, while the other side retains lines and marks from the hand that once held it.
Participants are invited to make an Athens souvenir by joining this community walk. As the Athens collection of Hand Pressed Souvenirs grows throughout the duration of the exhibition, so too does the evidence of a community’s relationship to place.
This walk will take place at the Ridges Complex. If you are interested in a walk on Court Street, please sign up for the walk happening on March 23rd!
Walk Leader: Len Loomis, Graduate Student in Sculpture
This is a FREE program for community members of all ages. Please note that individuals under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
Visit the exhibition to see how, as the Athens collection of Hand Pressed Souvenirs grows throughout the duration of the exhibition, so too does the evidence of our community’s relationship to place.
In Hand: Contemporary Material Engagements with the Built World, curated by Kate Hampel and Sam Dodd (Sept. 22, 2023 - March 31, 2024).
