NQPI Seminar | Research Opportunities in Small Businesses, Dec. 1
The Nanoscale and Quantum Phenomena Institute (NQPI) 's Seminar Forum presents Andrew Foley discussing "Research Opportunities in Small Businesses" on Dec. 1 at 4:10 p.m. in Walter 245.
Foley is Principal Scientist at Nanohmics Inc. in Austin, TX.
Abstract : In 1950, the National Science Foundation was created to help better organize the sprawling government sponsored research system following World War II. Congress continues to codify the government’s relationship with academic and industrial researchers. Since the 80’s, Congress has mandated that roughly 3 percent of research funding must go to research led by small businesses. The government gets to direct the course of innovative research towards addressing some of its most challenging problems at, in general, much lower costs than large business led research. In a win/win, small businesses receive non-dilutive funding to pursue their best aligned ideas. This talk will contain a broad introduction for students and faculty to navigate this niche research industry or, for some, just an update on the latest goings on. This introduction will include a real-life example of what it is like in the industry for an Ohio University graduate (me). This talk will have something for you whether you want to know more about the job landscape following graduation, are interested in commercializing your own ideas, are looking into research funding opportunities, or are searching for partners to fill out your own research team.
