Panel discussion on Hobbits and the Hard Right, Sept. 28

The Center for Law, Justice & Culture hosts a panel discussion on "Hobbits and the Hard Right" on Sept. 28 at 4 p.m. in Bentley Hall 140.

This discussion is open to all students and will allow time for Q&A. Kevin Uhalde , associate professor of history and director of the Center for Law, Justice & Culture, explained the idea behind the event, which was sparked by recent national elections in Italy: "The likely next prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, and her party, Brothers of Italy, have long invoked the Hobbit and other fantasy lore in their political rhetoric. This phenomenon isn't limited to Italy and has a history of its own that is worth discussing." Faculty from a variety of disciplines will be on hand to provide context and answer questions.

Panel members include College of Arts & Sciences faculty members Mirna Zakić , associate professor of history; Mary Kate Hurley , associate professor of English; Edmond Chang , assistant professor of English: and Brian Collins , associate professor, chair of Classics & Religious Studies, and the Drs. Ram and Sushila Gawande Chair in Indian Religion and Philosophy. Also joining are Rebecca Onion of Slate.com and moderator Uhalde.
