The Physics & Astronomy Colloquium Series presents Felipe Herrera of Universidad de Santiago de Chile discussing “Vacuum and Molecules for Useful Quantum Advantage Today" on Oct. 22.

Colloquia are Fridays at 4:10 p.m.

Abstract: The electromagnetic vacuum has a fundamental importance in our understanding of the interactions between atoms, the formation of molecules, and all the light-matter interaction processes that form the basis of our everyday technology. In the era of quantum technology, recent experiments have shown that the electromagnetic vacuum can now be engineered to alter the way atoms interact with each other to form molecules at room temperature, a possibility that is expected to have far-reaching implications in chemistry and materials science.

Through the discussion of selected examples, I will describe how decades of studies of quantized electromagnetic fields can help us in controlling elementary chemical processes that can ultimately result in vacuum-assisted molecular devices for useful quantum advantage in the near future.
