Power & Privilege Day
Description: During this training, students and staff will engage with 2 large activities relating to leadership and power, and how our privilege plays a role in our lives. To begin, we will complete an activity called “Privilege Beads”, where participants will explore their privilege individually. After, we will come together as a group and discuss how we interact with these concepts in our real life. Second, the participants will play the “StarPower” game from Simulation Training Systems. This “game” explores the use and abuse of power within leadership and diversity.
From the StarPower creator: Participants have a chance to progress from one level of society to another by acquiring wealth through trading with other participants. Once the society is established, the group with the most wealth is given the right to make the rules for the game. The power group generally makes rules which maintain or increase its power and which those being governed consider to be unfair. This generally results in some sort of rebellion by the other members of the society.
Through this training, participants will be able to identify systems of injustice within power, recognize one’s own privilege, and be able to engage with their world in a more equitable way.
