This session will explore the weakening of the Voting Rights Act and election reforms in recent years and the potential impact on the upcoming 2024 elections. Ohio Alumnus, Author, and President and CEO of the Promise of Democracy Foundation, Inc. Greg Moore will cover a brief history of electoral reforms which have broadened access to the ballot and the important role that Ohio has played in the ongoing voting rights movement.

About the virtual presenter: 

Gregory T. Moore is considered one of the nation’s leading voting rights advocates. He is currently President and CEO of the Promise of Democracy Foundation, Inc., a non-profit organization where he continues his lifelong commitment to the expansion of democracy, voting rights and civic education. For the past 30 years, Moore has held several key roles in Washington, DC and the state of Ohio including serving as the Executive Director of the NAACP-National Voter Fund, Legislative Director and Chief of Staff for the late Rep. John Conyers, Jr., Deputy Political Director of the Democratic National Committee, Senior Strategist for the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights. 

Moore helped lead a 5-year advocacy effort to reform our nation’s archaic voter registration laws and was instrumental in helping to steer the final passage of the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 (The “Motor Voter” Act). He has worked for years for expanded ballot access and increased civic participation among underserved communities. Moore currently serves as Chair of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission’s National Board of Advisors in Washington, DC and is author of the recently released book, Beyond the Voting Rights Act: The Untold Story of the Struggle to Reform America’s Voter Registration Laws . 

Moore has been instrumental in several national groundbreaking initiatives from his days as a student activist on the campus of Ohio University to his most recent advocacy work protecting voting rights in the state of Ohio. In the 1980s he was elected the Student Senate President and was instrumental in re-establishing an elected student government At Ohio University after it was dissolved in the late 1970s. He was later elected nationwide as the first African American President of the United States Student Association, at the time, the nation’s oldest and largest national student association. 
He went on to later serve as a presidential appointee to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Federal Holiday Commission where he worked with Mrs. Coretta Scott King and fellow commissioners to establish the nation’s first official observances of the MLK Federal Holiday across the U.S. While serving as Director of the Voting Rights Institute at the DNC, Moore led the efforts that established the Democratic party’s first 50-state election protection program throughout the U.S. 
Most recently he has been highly active in the Ohio redistricting reform campaigns and voting rights initiatives. In 2021 he was appointed the Co-Chair of the Ohio Citizens Redistricting Commission and in 2023 help led the statewide efforts to preserve Ohio ‘right of referendum through the No on Issue # 1 campaign last August. 

Moore is a graduate of Ohio University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Organizational Communications from the Scripps School of Communications, and just recently completed his  Master of Public Administration from the George Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Service in December 2021. He is a proud and active alumni Bobcat and currently serves as the Vice Chair of the OU Alumni Association’ Board of Directors and serves as the OUAA’s Liaison to the Ohio University Foundation Board of Directors. He is an active member of the Ebony Bobcat Alumni Network, (EBN)  and was the co-founder and the first president of the Ohio University Student Senate Alumni Society. In 2022 President Hugh Sherman selected him to serve on the President’s Council where he continues to advise Ohio’s current President Dr. Lori Stewart Gonzalez.
