Ohio University's Science Cafe series presents Dr. Nathan Weyand discussing "Microbial Colonies & Protective Blood" at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 18.

Weyand loves working with microbial life and believes that “small life” has a lot to teach us.  One particular topic that fascinates him is how some infectious bacteria manage to persist in our bodies without causing symptoms.

Weyand’s research focuses on  Neisseria gonorrhoeae , a Gram-negative bacterium that causes the sexually transmitted disease gonorrhea. During his café, he will discuss basic concepts of bacteriology and cellular microbiology, why microbiologists like counting colonies, and how our defensive immune system protects the human body.
