“My experiential learning trip in Guanajuato, Mexico opened my eyes to the reality of history,” History major Samantha Lamka '20reflected. “I am use to reading and writing about historical events and places that helped shape the world we know today. But being able to travel to, walk around in, and observe the actual place where the Mexican independence movement happened gave me a whole new perspective of what history really means. I am very grateful that I had the opportunity to experience a way of learning that made history come alive again.”

What are the Benefits of Study Abroad for Someone in History?
History involves the study of diverse societies, cultures and nations. History students are encouraged to travel abroad to gain first-hand knowledge of those cultures to better understand their discipline. Students can connect their study of the past to the world around them: the art and architecture as well as the landscape and local way of life. In addition to history immersion, study abroad programs can also work as language immersion. The majority of OHIO programs and outside providers offer courses in the history and culture of their host nation.
What types of academic requirements can I fulfill abroad?
University-wide Requirements: Tier II courses can often be fulfilled easily abroad. Tier III courses are offered on some OHIO study abroad programs, but credit for Tier III cannot generally be transferred back from a Non-OHIO or exchange program.
Arts & Sciences Requirements:Courses to fulfill college level requirements, including the foreign language requirement, can be taken abroad.
Major Requirements:Students can look for programs abroad that will fulfill geographical and chronological distribution requirements within the history major.
