We have designed the Instructional Design Certificate to build your instructional technology skills. Higher education requires instructional design skills and experience to support faculty. K-12 education is following this trend and industry has long been at the forefront of integrating designed educational experiences into their training systems.

We offer the IDC in a 100% online format to optimize flexibility and convenience for participants from a broad geographic area. The program serves those who desire to transition into the field of instructional technology. We have designed the certificate for individuals from a variety of backgrounds who seek to design instruction for their specific area of expertise as well as those who wish to focus on online learning in general.

Many certificate holders pursue opportunities in government, education, and industry. The Professional Instructional Design Certificate prepares professionals with the knowledge, skills, and experiences to work independently and collaboratively in this fast-growing occupation.

Completion of the program earns participants 9 semester hours of graduate credit, all of which can be applied as progress toward a Master of Education in Computer Education and Technology degree or up to 8 hours may be used toward meeting requirements of the Doctor of Philosophy in Instructional Technology  at Ohio University.

Please check out the  Bursar's website  for the latest information. Please note that as a non-degree program, the certificate is not eligible for federal financial aid. 


Admission Requirements

Applicants should submit an online non-degree application, official transcripts, and the $35 application fee and select CTPIND.  Classes start at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters.

  • The final application deadline for Fall Semester 2024 is August 9 and classes begin August 26, 2024.
  • The first-priority application deadline for Spring Semester 2025 is December 1 and classes begin January 13, 2025. 

Ohio University employees interested in this program for fall must apply by March 15.

Please note: Recommendation letters are not a requirement for admission to the certificate program. As well, no GRE is required. Individuals are encouraged to apply early as enrollment is limited.

PLEASE NOTE: If a student is already enrolled in another graduate program at OHIO, please complete the Application for Update of Graduate Academic Program  form for admission.  The major code you should use is CTPIDC when requesting to add the program to your graduate studies.
