ORITE researchers are studying the noise levels generated by tires on various kinds of pavement to find quieter road surfaces. ORITE is also investigating the design and effectiveness of abatement methods, such as walls and berms, to improve their performance.
Description
The transportation noise laboratory is furnished with state-of-the-art equipment to acquire and analyze noise data. Computer models are developed to model traffic noise propagation and to predict the effects of various abatement strategies.
Vehicle type, tire configuration, pavement, and weather conditions are some of the many factors considered in the noise abatement research program. The research results are used by other researchers and professionals involved in the assessment and study of transportation noise.
