A Sudden Garden features 51 works of 36 Haitian artists from the collection of the Huntington Museum of Art in West Virginia. Most of these works date from the period known as the Haitian Renaissance, which saw a blooming of pictorial art by untrained artists working at Le Centre D' Art in Port au Prince from the 1950s through the '60s. These paintings celebrate everyday life, spirit and landscape of a nation that has endured political upheaval, social unrest and economic adversity for most of its existence.
