The faculty mentor or thesis advisor will also be invited to attend the presentation ceremony, but their expenses will not be covered.
Deadline
Friday, October 18, 2024, 5 PM EDT
For consideration, nomination materials (the nomination form, the abstract of the nominated thesis, and the thesis) must be submitted electronically by the department/school via the nominating survey by the aforementioned deadline.

Guidelines
An Ohio University graduate student must meet the following guidelines:
- An Ohio University graduate student nominee must be recommended by a graduate chairperson or department/school chairperson AND
- A nominee must meet the following MAGS 2025 guidelines:
- To be considered, a thesis must contain original work that makes an unusually significant contribution to the discipline. It must be in a format that conforms to accepted disciplinary standards, and it must have been accepted as final by the degree-granting institution. Theses submitted electronically will normally be in PDF format; hyperlinks to additional materials may be included but must be verified prior to submission
- Nominations will be accepted in the disciplines of Social Sciences and Mathematics, Physical Sciences & Engineering in which the institution offers a master’s degree. (For purposes of this competition, fine arts and history are considered with the humanities.) Original works accepted by an institution “in lieu of thesis” (such as musical compositions, published books, works of art, computer software, etc.) may not be nominated.
- The effective date of degree award, or the completion of master’s degree requirements, must fall in the period of July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2024, inclusive, for each nominee selected. Such degree award or completion is to be confirmed by the institution's graduate dean or other administrative officer responsible for master’s degree programs. Since the intent of the competition is to recognize scholarship by students who are pursuing their first graduate research degree, individuals who received a Ph.D. (or comparable research degree) in any discipline prior to the writing of the master’s thesis are not eligible. However, recipients of a first professional degree awarded prior to the writing of the thesis may be nominated.
Nomination Materials
Nomination materials must include:
- The nomination form (Qualtrics survey linked at Nomination Link below),
- Abstract of the nominated thesis,
- Thesis, and
- Letter from a faculty mentor.
These nomination materials must be submitted electronically via the link provided below.
Please note: When the Graduate College submits the selected nominees’ materials to MAGS, each nomination packet will include a letter from the Dean of the Graduate College. The contents of each letter will be based on the Graduate Council selection committee's deliberations
Ohio University departments/schools may submit only one nominee.

These awards are made each year to individuals who, in the opinion of the award committee, have completed dissertations representing original work that makes an unusually significant contribution to the discipline.

The listed disciplines should be considered representative rather than all-inclusive. If you have questions about whether a dissertation qualifies for consideration, please contact Anna M. Naranjo at anaranjo@cgs.nche.edu .
Eligibility:
Each department or school can nominate only one student. A nominee must be recommended by the school/department or graduate chairperson.
The effective date of the degree awarded, or the completion of doctoral degree requirements and dissertation, must lie in the period of July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2025 , inclusive, for each nominee selected.
