Transition to Single GME
From July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2020, the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) worked to successfully transition to a single accreditation system for graduate medical education in the U.S. The single GME accreditation system provides for consistent methods of evaluation and accountability, it enhances opportunities for all resident physicians, and it enhances transparency to outside entities, including the federal government, licensing boards, credentials committees and the public.

The ACGME accredits Sponsoring Institutions and residency and fellowship programs, confers recognition on additional program formats or components, and dedicates resources to initiatives addressing areas of import in graduate medical education. The ACGME employs best practices, research, and advancements across the continuum of medical education to demonstrate its dedication to enhancing health care and graduate medical education.

Osteopathic Recognition
Osteopathic Recognition is a designation conferred by the ACGME’s Osteopathic Recognition Committee upon ACGME-accredited programs that demonstrate, through a formal application process, the commitment to teaching and assessing Osteopathic Principles and Practice (OPP) at the graduate medical education level.
Osteopathic Learning Environment
It is expected every ACGME-accredited program with Osteopathic Recognition will create an osteopathic-focused learning environment that spans the length of the educational program. Each program has varying resources and missions based on geographic location, background of faculty members, and the needs of the patient population it serves. The avenues to attain an osteopathic learning environment are equally varying, to allow each individual program to successfully meet the Requirements for Osteopathic Recognition.
Post-graduate training occurs through both longitudinal and focused educational experiences. In this spirit, an osteopathic learning environment provides experiences that support this developmental process for each program and the learners within it. The ACGME Milestones allow for this developmental growth throughout the course of the educational program.
There are several elements a program can utilize to establish an osteopathic learning environment, which may include focused rotations, integrated rotations, osteopathic rounds, clinic rotations, and osteopathic patient care conferences.
