Ohio University business students pose at the Sports Analytics Conference

The Ohio Sports Analytics Team (OSAT) meets weekly to discuss and investigate developments in the progressing field of analytics and sport. The organization works with students to develop case studies looking at recent works in sports analytics and encourages members to develop their own insights. The club fosters further growth by working with students to develop quantitative skills, interact with industry professionals, and by allowing students the opportunity to attend industry conferences.

Although the Ohio Sports Analytics Team (OSAT) is housed within the College of Business, the team's aim is to include students from all Ohio University majors who are interested in sports analytics.

While most members' academics fit the expected Sport Management or Business Analytics path, the team's skill-set correlates to all aspects of business: finance, accounting, MIS, etc. Furthermore, students from non-business majors (i.e., mathematics, computer science, statistics, engineering, coaching), bring their own perspectives to the group, making the team stronger. Diversity of thought is vital to the club’s success.

Membership

Membership is open to any driven Bobcat who enjoys sports, takes initiative, and can work independently. No matter your knowledge or skillset, you can have an impact on the club.

Annual dues for the team are $25. All members receive a t-shirt, compensation for any sports analytics book of their choosing, and financial assistance in the event of going to an analytics conference. Team Projects

Team Projects have shown variability throughout the club’s history. Traditionally we perform personal or group case studies on a burning question in sports.

In the 2019–2020 academic year, the team was able to collaborate with a former member Nate Babner, in consulting for Vantage Management Group. Due to our ability for getting into the specifics, OSAT was tasked into data collection and analysis for an athlete’s worth upon entering free agency.

Aside from projects, OSAT participates in fantasy sports leagues, conducts seasonal mock drafts, and socialize through watching major sporting events.

As OSAT progresses, the next big step is to put on an analytics conference and/or speaker series right here in Athens, OH. Stay tuned for more information and if you would be interested in participating, reach out!

Business Analytics Major

The Ohio University Sports Analytics Team works to integrate information taught in analytics classes as well as from sport management classes. The club is structured with regular instructional units. We teach you about a current and relevant topic in analytics. You will also prepare a case study that pertains to those skills that you learned during our meetings. For those pursuing the analytics co-major, this instruction will provide a strong framework that will give you an advantage in more advanced analytics classes. For those who are not interested in pursuing analytics as a field, this instruction will give a foundation of knowledge that will make you a more valued employee in the sports field.
