About Haley Duschinski

Dr. Haley Duschinski is a professor of Anthropology at Ohio University (Ph.D. Anthropology, Harvard University, 2004). She is a legal and political anthropologist with research specializations in law and society; violence, war, and power; critical Indigenous studies and settler colonial studies; human rights and international justice; and militarization and impunity in South Asia, with a focus on Kashmir. She has conducted field research on these themes in Kashmir, India, Cambodia, and Geneva.

Duschinski has co-edited  Resisting Occupation in Kashmir  (U Penn Press 2018),  The Routledge Handbook of Critical Kashmir Studies  (Routledge 2022), and the Palgrave Handbook of New Directions in Kashmir Studies  (Palgrave 2023). She has also co-edited special issues of the  Journal of Legal Pluralism and Unofficial Law  on comparative studies of occupation (2018),  Critique of Anthropology  on occupation and settler colonialism (2020), and  Himalaya  on war and suffering in Kashmir (2020). Her research has appeared in academic journals such as Social & Legal Studies, Political & Legal Anthropology Review, Critique of Anthropology, Cultural Studies, Race & Class, Journal of Legal Pluralism and Unofficial Law, Memory Studies, Anthropology Today, Interventions, Himalaya, and Anthropological Quarterly, among others. In August 2020, she co-edited the virtual series  A Year of Siege: Politics of Annexation and Settler Colonialism in Kashmir  as part of the Speaking Justice to Power series of the Association of Political & Legal Anthropology (APLA).

Duschinski is a founding member of the  Critical Kashmir Studies  collective and an active member of the  Kashmir Scholars Consultative and Advocacy Network (KSCAN) . She presented expert testimony on Kashmir at the US congressional hearing of the  Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission  in November 2019 as well as several briefings for the State Department, Congress, and UN Special Rapporteurs.

As Director of the Center for Law, Justice & Culture from 2013-2020, Duschinski oversaw the development, expansion and institutionalization of various undergraduate and graduate programs, including collaborations with units across campus. She founded the M.A. program in Law, Justice & Culture, including both Athens Campus and eCampus pathways, and served as CLJC Graduate Director from 2018-present. Duschinski has provided active service to the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, most notably as Anthropology Coordinator from 2013-2017 (including chairing four tenure-track search committees) and currently as Anthropology BRICKS Coordinator. She is Chair-Elect of the President’s University International Council and recently served as Chair of the Provost’s university-wide Global Curriculum Committee.

​Duschinski directed the Spring Break Study Abroad Program on Human Rights, Law & Justice in Northern Ireland annually from 2013-2020. She has ​won various teaching awards including Presidential Teaching Award (2014-2017), Outstanding Tutor Award 2010-(2011), Graselli-Brown Teaching Award (2009-2010), and University Professor Award (2007-2008). She has been awarded the Ohio University Research Council Award and the Baker Award to support her research, as well as two 1804 Fund Awards to support new globally-focused program development.

Duschinski provides active service to the profession. From 2018-present, she has served on the board of the Consortium for Undergraduate Law & Justice Programs (CULJP). She is currently completing a two-year term as CULJP Vice President. She regularly organizes research and service panels at the Law & Society Association Annual Meetings. She has served on-site as a National Review Panelist for the National Science Foundation Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grant and the National Security Education Program.
