Prior to moving to honors, Geoff Buckley taught for 24 years in the Department of Geography. From 2010-2020, he also served as Director of Studies for HTC’s Environmental Studies program. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Connecticut College, a master’s from the University of Oregon, and a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland.
One of Geoff’s main jobs is developing experiential learning opportunities for the OHIO Honors Program. Since 2022, he has built a network of partnerships that provides students with a wide variety of options to learn outside the classroom—from the local to the regional to the global. His favorite classes to teach are Road Trip: The Epic American Journey and Parks and Recreation .
On the research front, Geoff is a true geographer. He loves it all, especially if it has anything to do with urban environments or national parks. Over the course of his career, he has published more than 50 articles and book chapters, and authored or edited six books, including The Routledge Companion to the American Landscape (with Chris Post and Alyson Greiner, 2023), The American Environment Revisited: Environmental Historical Geographies of the United States (with Yolonda Youngs, 2018), and North American Odyssey: Historical Geographies for the Twenty-first Century (with Craig Colten, 2014). His current research explores the career of Arthur E. Demaray, who rose through the ranks of the National Park Service to become the agency’s fifth director.
