Storm Pattern Rug

20th c.
Henry: Storm Pattern rugs are very popular in the western part of the reservation where Shimá is from. This pattern is what is taught by the elders to their children. When Shimá talks about the Storm Pattern, she speaks of the four sacred mountains, of thunderbolts, and of the duality of the male and female. She speaks of the coming together of that duality as a sign of good hope. This pattern is about regeneration. You’ll see Spider Woman, who taught our people to weave in many of the Storm Pattern weavings.
Can you see the mountains, thunderbolts, spider, and duality in this?
