Committees to put division's strategic plan into motion

Three committees have been established to advance the aims and aspirations outlined in the Division of Student Affairs 2018 Strategic Plan [PDF] . Published in March 2018, the plan serves as a blueprint for the future of Student Affairs at Ohio University.

“The Strategic Planning Work Group were strong advocates for creating cross-disciplinary committees to operationalize the objectives of the strategic plan. It’s exciting to see the next phase of the strategic plan come to fruition with the creation of these committees,” said Jenny Hall-Jones, senior associate vice president for student affairs and dean of students, who is spearheading the division’s strategic planning process.

Committee membership will work to operationalize the key results of the strategic plan and recommend professional development pertaining to committee objectives. Their work will focus on three areas: equity and social justice, retention and graduation, and learning outcomes.

The Committee for Equity and Social Justiceis charged with ensuring that a framework of equity and social justice is embedded into the day-to-day work of division employees. This will be accomplished through annual demographic reports, updated job descriptions that include cultural competencies, and the development of personal and departmental goals around equity and social justice.

The Retention and Graduation Committeeis charged with engaging all students in meaningful programs, services and activities to increase retention and graduation rates. This will be accomplished through enhanced programs and services, increased engagement between DOSA staff and at-risk students, and expansion of the OHIO Basic Needs Initiative.

The Committee for Learning Outcomeshas begun its work toward creating, measuring and improving upon common student learning outcomes across student affairs departments. This is being accomplished through a learning outcome audit, the development of measurable competencies and skills, and division-wide assessment.

Strategic planning committees will consist of 11-14 members, including DOSA staff members and campus partners. Members will convene weekly for regularly scheduled 1-hour meetings. To ensure transparency, meetings will be open to all DOSA staff members who wish to attend.

DOSA committee appointments are two-year terms. During this time, DOSA staff are expected to contribute approximately four hours per week toward committee objectives. This work will be written into DOSA committee members’ job expectations and incorporated into their professional goals.

“I’m grateful that so many of our division employees and partners across the university have volunteered their service on our strategic planning committees,” said Vice President for Student Affairs Jason Pina. “Their work will ensure continued progress toward achieving the breakthrough objectives outlined in the division’s strategic plan.”
