Accessible OHIO: How can I provide accessible service counters?

At Ohio University, we embrace that we have a collective responsibility to create the opportunity for people with disabilities to have an accessible and inclusive experience whether a student, employee, visitor, or community member.

There are many simple ways we can all contribute to the development and maintenance of an accessible and inclusive environment. Accessible OHIO: It’s What We Do highlights a series of actions that any of us may take – no expertise required! The Office for University Accessibility can be reached at www.ohio.edu/accessibility  or 740-593-2620.

How can I provide accessible service counters?

An accessible service counter allows for a variety of individuals to receive service and includes four key features:

  • At least one section of the counter is 36-inch long and no more than 36 inches above the floor.
  • A 30" by 48" clear area in front of the service counter
  • A clear path to get to the service counter
  • A counter space clear of plants, decorations, photos and other items

For more details about accessible service counters, the US Access Board has created the video, Accessible Sales and Service Counters .

If you need assistance in reviewing your service counter space or providing accessible customer service, please contact Office for University Accessibility at 740-593-2620 or  access@ohio.edu .
