First-Year and Student Transitions Office begins recruitment of Learning Community Leaders

Ohio University’s First-Year and Student Transitions Office is recruiting Learning Community Leaders to support first-year student experiences and transitions.

Learning Communities (LC) create learning-based peer networks by enrolling groups of up to 25 students in sets of thematically linked courses. LCLs work with their LC instructor to lead a weekly core course with a LC group, plan outside activities, and hold study sessions while earning $8.95 an hour for up to ten hours a week.

Learning Community Leader Ellie Burke encourages other students to apply to serve as LCLs.

“My favorite part of being a Learning Community Leader is getting to watch my students emerge from their shells,” said Burke. “As the semester goes on, they gain confidence in themselves and forge connections that will last a lifetime. As an LCL, you get to be an integral part of that journey; both as a support for them and as a trusted peer. It’s an amazing feeling to watch first-year students grow and know that you were part of their first experiences with college.”

This year the application cycle has begun earlier in the year and applications to become a Learning Community Leader are now being accepted. The deadline to apply is Friday, Feb. 12. Faculty and staff may nominate students to LCL positions by completing the nomination form at www.ohio.edu/uc/learning-communities/apply . The deadline for nominations is Friday, Feb. 5.

“Learning Community Leaders play an important role in helping first-year and transfer students with a successful transition to college life,” said Director of Learning Community Programs Kris Kumfer. “LCLs help inform and engage new students both in and outside the classroom as they build connections at Ohio University and in the greater community.”
